Phase I of the Virginia Pilot Project is focused on utilizing GPS coordinates to capture an excavation area. The captured coordinates are then sent back to VUPS where they are used to determine the facility owners who need to be notified about the upcoming excavation.

The process of developing this technology began with extensive planning and coordination with a wide variety of stake holders who provided feedback on how the process should work. The project has went completely through planning, development and testing stages to finally arrive at a production process that can be used in the field.
